What a day that was, and one I will never forget.
I remember that we spent a large part of the game goading the FGR right back that they were going to get relegated with us because Eastbourne were winning (which they weren't). By a twist of fate, Eastbourne ended up scoring late goals and winning their game, relegating FGR, who then got reprieved, so stayed up.
What a rollercoaster decade it's been. I know for sure that many clubs would have just packed the bags and given up - but not us - nor Margate, Maidstone etc who have all been in similar circumstances. Local football clubs are an integral part of their community and cannot be allowed just to die. The folk behind this club of ours are just extraordinary, with so many people prepared to pitch in for no reward, just because....
We can but hope that the powers that be will recognise this magnificent contribution to the Grays community and assist us to secure that hallowed plot of land.
Come on You Blues

Huge thank you for putting that together. Some very interesting information about the squad, some of whom I can barely remember! Managed to spot myself in the video. A very sad day, but at least it was a 2-1 win at the end of a poor season on the pitch. I have 52 years of memories of the Rec, not as long as some, I know, but really treasured.

Indeed - must have given someone something to do during the long hours of lockdown. A great read.
There is an Arien Retkoceri (slightly different spelling) shown on Google - played for Aveley, Barking, Waltham Forest in the mid 2010s. But no mention in any of the lists of him playing for us, but maybe he never actually got on the pitch, so it wouldn't register.
And I found one reference to Joseph Bayowa having previously played for East Thurrock, but nothing after us.

The competitive matches include all home league and cup games but exclude the Stan Veness matches which I deemed to be preseason “friendlies”. I owe a lot to Chris Jones and Chris Turners stats.I used the Isthmian final tables to establish total wins per season and found an anomaly when an away win was shown as a loss !! I cross checked Chris’s stats to get the correct result.!!

And just before I put my anorak away - the referee that day Ian Smedley remains a linesman in the EFL, as well as his day job working for Sky as an operations manager.

Great location. but really fenced in with no room for growth. or car park. Some great days and some really bad.
Learn from the layout (I do note some of the historic reasons) and when, note the word WHEN and not if. Build a ground with an open layout. For me, something was wrong with the ballcourt but I could never put my finger on it.
I've never seena Yank so EMBARRASSED in all my life when Mark-J Jords and the get along gang as I called them. Started Chanting U.S.A U.S.A U.S.A as the rest of us all started pileing in chanting it agressively as you do. that Goalie walked round the side of the ballcourt stand, softly saying Hi. totally Embarrassed though got the ironic 51st State humour behind it. He ended up playing in the US MLS for a few games.

As far as I know he never played for the first team. He was here for my first pre-season but he didn't stay. We have bumped into him playing for the other side a few times.
